Trekking photography tour in Nepal

This seems to be an obvious question but you should always remember that you are going to carry your backpack on your shoulders 5 to 7 hours a day during the trek…
This needs to be considered carefully.
You will be able to leave some of your belongings in a safe place in Pokhara, so, take the minimum necessary.

1/ Clothing

Depending on the altitude, the temperature varies greatly between day and night. Daytime is usually nice and warm with an average 25 degrees C unless clouds come in and it could get cold fast, specially over 2000m. Between 3 and 4000m, the nights are really fresh and it's often freezing when you pass 3500m. At the Annapurna base camp, 4200 m, you really need that warm hat and socks…
- Short pants are fine for daytime, at night a warm pair of tight pants is necessary.
A light shirt is usually enough for daytime.  It gets hot  and you can easily work up a sweat when  walking up. A T-shirt and a warm coat plus a light mountain jacket are useful in evenings.
- Some well-insulated and light down clothing will keep you warm.
- Good walking shoes and a few pairs of socks, strong sandals are OK if you are used to wearing them.
- A sun hat, a wool bonnet plus a scarf for the wind are necessary as  well as good sunglasses. Although it rarely snows this time of the year, it could happen briefly and the sun is very strong.
* You will be able to buy most clothing in Kathmandu and Pokhara before the trek, good quality (like North Face) and the price is great too.
- 1 small towel, soap and the minimum toiletries (toilet paper if you use it)

2/ Miscellaneous
- A good backpack with a cover, of course, is the most important. Don’t take it too big as you will probably fill it!
- Trekking poles or a good bamboo stick is useful specially when going downhill or crossing streams.
- A tight and light 1-liter water bottle with enough water purifier pills (about 3 liters per day trek), you can refill everywhere in the mountains, there is a lot of water but you need to make sure it’s drinkable. Bottled water is expensive and sometimes hard to find..
- A book if you want to read, could be heavy (Kindle is a good option)…. Pen and paper are nice to carry, do your own book or take notes to go with your photographs.
- If you are taking medicine on a regular basis, don’t forget to take enough with you, no need of first aid kit, we will have one for the group.
- Sun screen and lip balm
- A small rechargeable LED flashlight or head lamp even better.
- 2 or 3 clean plastic bags for dirty clothes.
- A pocket knife.
<-------- Your camera gear (see the page Photo equipment )
- Photocopies of your passport (leave the original in Pokhara)

3/ What you DON’T need …
- Sleeping bag, tent, pads, cooking gears or food (except some sweet energy snacks and you can buy those in every village) as we will be sleeping in comfortable enough guesthouses with good blankets and a restaurant with sufficient food.
- GPS, maps (we will have one)
- Cell phone, laptops, Ipads, MP3s or other electronic devices (except for Kindle). If you are Internet addict, you will find connection in some villages (nothing super fast but good enough to check your mail).
