Nepal is one of the wealthiest countries in the world in terms of bio-diversity due to its unique geographical position and altitude variation. The elevation of the country ranges from 60m above sea level in the Terai area to the highest point on earth, Mt. Everest at 8848 m, all within a distance of 150 km resulting into climatic conditions from Sub-tropical to Arctic.

​Nepali Food & Drinks
The basic Nepali dish is called Dal-Baht and it’s a vegetarian meal composed by the following:


Dal - lentil soup usually eaten with rice. most popular lentils usued as dal in Nepal are black, red and yellow.
Sag -  Green Vegetables - Spinach, mustard greens or broad-leaved mustard. A standard accompaniment to plain rice for lunch or dinner.
Alu – Potatoes are also quite commonly used in everyday meals.
Bhat - steamed rice.
Tarkari - any vegetable or group of vegetables in curry, usually broth. can be made in thousands ways.
Achar - a sour, spice or seet pickle. can be made in thousand ways. the most poplar are made of ground tomatoes, sliced radish, ground coriander, boiled or diced potatoes.


The Dal Baht is usually served in two portions, when you have finished your plate and if you want more, another ration of rice, dal and vegetable will be served again.


Most people are vegetarians but some also eat meat:
Masu - meat with spices (curry) and gravy. usually served with rice. Some Nepalese eat chicken or mutton. Some eat buffalo and pork. Almost no one eats cow. Killing cow is prohibited in Nepal and is punishable by law.
Momo - (Newari and Tibetan) a dumplings filled with minced meat (usually buffalo but also chicken), served steamed or fried. very popular appetizer, afternoon snack or evening meal.

Cheese – Cow or Yack cheese.



Desserts


Dahi - Yogurt/Curd
Juju Dhau - popular creamy curd from Bhaktapur. Juju literally means ‘‘king".
Sikarni - curd mixed with dried fruits.


Drinks

Tschia  -  Black tea.
Dudh tschia – Black tea with milk is what most people drink at any time day and night.
Rakshi – Millet alcohol.
